The Positive Effects of Cannabidiol
Therapeutic Benefits of Cannabidiol
Have you ever wondered what the latest advancements in science are? Or what medicinal breakthroughs researchers have made or if they are on the cusp of a major discovery? Well, you’re probably not the only one who does!
As a child, the thought of innovation always managed to pique my interest. And there was generally enough fodder for me to be completely fascinated. For instance, even in 2019, there have been several groundbreaking developments.
A relevant example is the advent of artificial organs. Bio-printing is the latest advancement that has the potential to save many lives. It has been used in the regeneration process for burn victims.
However, more recently, scientists have been able to create blood vessels and synthetic ovaries for patients (Ellis, 2019). Once these organs are placed inside the body, they are able to germinate and replace the old ones.
Scientists are working tirelessly to ensure that the human body does not reject artificial organs. This is because if the immune system accepts these organs, it could prove to be an extraordinary change that could save so many lives.
The type of research that scientists carry out can vary and the one I will focus on is called translational research. It transpires when there is a discovery which can lead to the development of new treatments in medical care.
Speaking of medical leaps, I want to discuss an agent that has the capability to save lives. I am talking about Cannabidiol. What exactly is cannabidiol and why does it merit consideration? Also, does it warrant translational research?
In the following passages, I will discuss the all-important details of Cannabidiol and how it has the potential to change millions of lives.
Why Cannabidiol is Imperative
Cannabidiol or CBD is a compound that is taken from enriched cannabis plants. It is one of hundred plus cannabinoids that are found in the plant.
Given the fact that cannabidiol contains a low level of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it has gained some attention and inspired considerable research.
It must be noted that cannabidiol is not accepted in some circles owing to its origin and there has been widespread debate regarding its legal status as well. However, it has various medicinal propensities (which we will discuss below).
Besides having several medical benefits, clinical tests have also indicated that cannabidiol has other benefits too. For instance, according to a 2013 study by the British Journal of Pharmacology, it is comprised of anti-inflammatory properties (Fernandez-Ruiz, 2012).
Cannabidiol also boasts anticonvulsant, antioxidant, antipsychotic and antiemetic traits! Nevertheless, skeptics and critics argue that since cannabidiol is extracted from cannabis and is linked to marijuana, it should not be used for medical purposes.
Since I vehemently disagree with that notion, I will specify the advantages of using cannabidiol. Owing to its properties, which I alluded to earlier, CBD is able to combat a number of diseases and disorders.
As more cutting edge trials are conducted, there is a stronger indication that cannabidiol can be decisive against many ailments and afflictions.
The Health Benefits of Cannabidiol
Cannabidiol reduces Seizures
A seizure is an abrupt electrical disturbance in the human brain. It can induce changes in the behavior, movements or feelings of the person who is affected. Those who have multiple seizures are diagnosed with a condition called epilepsy.
Cannabidiol has propensities that can tackle seizures. It has the capability to become a therapeutic agent against epilepsy. For instance, CBD has anticonvulsant properties, which is how it can aid patients who suffer from seizures.
CBD can successfully diminish epileptic seizures in children for example. It targets calcium ion channels, glutamate receptor antagonists and sodium ion channels in the human brain.
In addition, the anticonvulsants in cannabidiol combat the neurotransmitters that distribute messages to neurons. This is meant to alter the activity of cells, particularly how ions follow in and out of neurons.
To further emphasize how beneficial cannabidiol can be for children suffering from regular seizures, I will cite a study that was conducted on the matter. A survey was conducted to gauge the reaction of children when they were given CBD (Porter, 2013).
A group of children were administered cannabidiol enriched cannabis because their condition had proven resistant to other forms of treatment. In total, nineteen children were included: thirteen were affected by the Dravet syndrome, four were suffering from Doose syndrome while one had Lennox-Gastaut syndrome while the remaining child was afflicted by idiopathic epilepsy.
In the aftermath of taking cannabidiol, it was concluded that sixteen of the nineteen parents whose children were involved observed a reduction in the seizures that transpired in their children.
Furthermore, out of these sixteen, two parents stated that their children were completely free of seizures, eight said that the seizures diminished by 80% while six parents indicated a 25-60% reduction.
That’s not all though! Parents also claimed that their children were able to sleep better, were more attentive generally and their mood also improved. Since the vast majority of states in America now permit the use of cannabidiol, parents are increasingly using the agent as a treatment for their children.
CBD alleviates Anxiety
Anxiety is defined as a state where an individual is overcome with overwhelming apprehension and trepidation. Side effects include high blood pressure.
The statistics relating to anxiety are quite alarming. It is estimated that the disorder affects more than 40 million adults in the United States. In addition, the prevalence of patients who are diagnosed with the condition has augmented in recent years too.
Although there are several pharmaceutical medications like benzodiazepine that can help patients with anxiety, cannabidiol is an excellent option since it can assuage anxiety attacks.
Cannabidiol is an antipsychotic which means it can alleviate not just anxiety but other mental health concerns as well, such as depression, Social Anxiety Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Being an antipsychotic also entails that cannabidiol has a calming influence on individuals and induces a sense of relaxation. CBD also ameliorates your mood drastically and lessens any disturbing thoughts that you may harbor.
Naturally, several trials have been conducted to assess the usefulness of cannabidiol. In one test, certain participants were given a few milligrams of cannabidiol while others were given an alternate placebo to determine the effects of both agents.
The results favored cannabidiol as those who had taken the plant extract exhibited less anxiety in comparison to those who has taken the placebo.
A byproduct of mainstream medication is that they are often have side effects. It is also entirely possible that the consumption of certain medicines can have an ill effect on the patient as well. As a result, patients may stop taking these medicines to avoid their unwanted effects.
An advantage of cannabidiol is that it has not shown any discernible side effects in the extensive research pertaining to anxiety patients. This has led to experts stating that cannabidiol should be the subject of further trials.
It reduces Migraines
A migraine is basically an intense and severe headache. They are typically preceded by sensory warning signs and other symptoms. The American Migraine Association estimates that migraines affect more than 36 million people in the country.
In essence, cannabidiol can address the onset of migraines. It is antipsychotic in nature which means it can serve as a therapeutic agent for those afflicted with migraines.
For instance, a comprehensive clinical study in Colorado was conducted to determine the impact that CBD could have on migraines. A group of 120 participants who had frequently had migraines were involved.
The results showed that the regularity of migraines decreased from approximately 10 each month to half that number. The participants were asked to inhale cannabidiol, which is what led to the elimination of their migraine.
The reason cannabidiol works on migraine patients is simple: it influences the serotonin that is found in their central nervous system. CBD is an agent that lowers the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks.
Serotonin is a vital chemical neurotransmitter in the human brain. Scientists believe that serotonin has an impact on a person’s moods, social behavior and their memory as well.
Cannabidiol plays an integral role since it changes how the serotonin dissemination process works. It slows down the quantity of serotonin that is displaced under normal circumstances.
Cannabidiol diminishes Neurodegenerative Diseases
This is an umbrella term that encapsulates a number of conditions that impact the neurons in the human brain. Pertinent examples of neurodegenerative diseases are Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and Huntington’s disease.
Cannabidiol can be the decisive agent in the treatment of neurodegenerative concerns. Preliminary trials have shown that CBD is able to prevent the toxic effects of neurotransmitter glutamate and associative oxygen species which can be radical in nature.
All of the above are located in the human brain, which means that cells in the brain are decimated when a neurodegenerative disease transpires.
Also, since cannabidiol is an antioxidant, it can protect the brain from the onset of beta-amyloid toxicities too. This is significant because subject to additional research, CBD could potentially act as a therapeutic agent for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Speaking of Parkinson’s disease, a study was conducted which showed that there was a recognizable improvement in patients who were administered a 100 to 600 milligram dosage of cannabidiol over a period of weeks.
Moreover, cannabidiol is a constituent that can treat other brain related issues as well. For instance, it can safeguard the brain when the flow of blood diminishes. This condition is called Ischemia.
It has also been suggested that because of its anti-inflammatory nature, CBD may be able to help patients who suffer from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
It can combat Cancer
We will move away from ailments that affect the human brain. Instead, we will focus on other afflictions such as cancer. Like the aforementioned diseases, cancer also affects millions in USA and beyond.
There are treatments for most forms of cancer and cannabidiol can have a positive impact as well. For instance, CBD and associated chemicals have characteristics which are able to counter the ill effects of a tumor.
Furthermore, cannabidiol has shown immense potential when it comes to serious conditions like leukemia and colon cancer. It has the traits to terminate cancerous cells. CBD may also reduce human glioma cellular infiltration.
Scientists are also hopeful that cannabidiol can tackle cancerous cells that bring about breast and prostate cancer. If used in conjunction with conventional antitumor medication, CBD may help in lessening discomfort felt by patients as well.
Also, the anti-cancer attributes of cannabidiol assist lymphokine activated killer (LAK) cells in combating cancerous cells and also obstruct CPR55 signaling.
It may also tackle Diabetes
CBD has the ability to significantly lower the growth of diabetes in young patients for example. Cannabidiol can potentially inhibit and even delay the inevitable elimination of insulin producing pancreatic cells. It may also stem the development of inflammatory cytokines in diabetic individuals.
The results of extensive research pertaining to CBD and its impact on diabetes has further strengthened belief that the former could be used as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of Type 1 diabetes, especially at an early stage of the disease.
CBD can help with Bowel Disease
The digestive system can be affected by a number of ailments. Cannabidiol can help in this instance as well.
Studies have shown that CBD prevents colitis in irritable bowel diseases for starters. It can also reduce inflammation in the digestive system and relieve symptoms of irritable bowel disease, which include loss of appetite, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Additionally, cannabidiol may also be used to revive gut motility to a state of normalcy in patients who are suffering from issues in their bowel.
Last but not least, cannabidiol can also decrease swelling in the gut through the activation of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma).
It can positively affect Arthritis
Yet another benefit of administering cannabidiol is that it can help patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This is all because CBD is an anti-inflammatory agent.
This trait is what enables cannabidiol to provide relief to patients who suffer from joint pain and inflammations. Also, it can lower the deterioration of joints and the onset of arthritis too.
A controlled clinical trial was organized to comprehend the effect CBD had on arthritis patients. Results indicated that the provision of Sativex over a number of weeks meant that participants showed considerable improvement in their condition.
They experienced less pain and felt more mobile in the aftermath of the trial.
It can assuage Discomfort
The health benefits of cannabidiol don’t end there! In fact, it can also act as an efficacious pain reliever. There is ample evidence which suggests that CBD can alleviate pain felt by patients who have a chronic condition.
If you suffer from bodily discomfort, chances are cannabidiol can improve your condition. Any neuropathic aches may diminish if CBD is taken.
Furthermore, cannabidiol has shown encouraging signs that postoperative pain can be addressed as well. Patients who suffer from the ill effects of diseases like multiple sclerosis may also take CBD.
It is crystal clear that administering cannabidiol has multiple benefits. It has been studied extensively for its potential role in the treatment of the aforementioned diseases. Research pertaining to CBD is an ongoing matter, which means that additional remedial traits may be discovered as well.
Combined with the fact that cannabidiol is no longer prohibited in most states in America, a case can be made that CBD must be given its due. It is a safe and natural treatment for several health issues.
For that reason, cannabidiol warrants further investigation and should be used much more as well.
